M ay 1st International Workers' Day will see significant actions by union workers against the war in Iraq. The most significant action will be taken by the dockworkers in San Francisco. Their decision to stop work on May 1st to express their opposition to the war in Iraq is a profound action. In a year in which Republicans and Democrats continue to promote policies that will prolong the war, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is representing the opposition of a majority of people in the United States to the war.

The ILWU’s resolution calls for support from other segments of labor. "That it is time to take labor’s protest to a more powerful level of struggle by calling on unions and working people in the U. S. and internationally to mobilize for a 'No Peace No Work Holiday' May 1, 2008 for 8 hours to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U. S. troops from the Middle East and that a clarion call from the ILWU be sent with an urgent appeal for unity of action to the AFL-CIO, the Change to Win Coalition and all of the international labor organizations to which we are affiliated to bring an end to this bloody war once and for all."

The Green Party of the United States and its state parties have been actively opposed to the war and will work to pass not only resolutions from city councils but other forms of legislation and referenda that seeks to re-orient American foreign and domestic policies. In an article co-authored by Green Ben Manski, it is reported: "Over 300 cities, towns, counties and states have expressed opposition to continuing the war. Fully half of the U.S. population either affirmatively voted in popular referenda for withdrawal from Iraq, or are represented by elected city councils, town boards or state legislatures that voted for withdrawal. The wisdom of the American people continues unabated." These cities include significant metropolitan areas such as New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles, as well as smaller towns and cities such as Albuquerque, NM, State College, PA and Arcata, CA across the US.

Green candidates for the Presidential nomination Cynthia McKinney , Kat Swift , Kent Mesplay and Jesse Johnson all united in opposition to the war in Iraq at a candidates' forum in San Francisco. "While Democrats have retreated, our own Green presidential candidates -- Jesse Johnson, Cynthia McKinney, Kent Mesplay, and Kat Swift -- have aggressively promoted the Green Party's position on the wars and on impeachment," said Dr. Julia Willebrand, co-chair of the Green Party's International Committee.

In this press release on March 10, the GPUS stated its support for the action of the ILWU. "Along with the election of Greens to Congress, actions like those planned by ILWU members are what we need to force the immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan," said Rodger Jennings, Green candidate for the US House in Illinois (District 12).

"The longshore workers intend to press Democratic and Republican presidential candidates to change their warhawk positions. Like the Green Party, the ILWU has opposed both of President Bush's wars from the beginning."

In New York City, the NY Metro Area Postal Workers Union voted for a two minute "period of silence" in support of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) . The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 214 in San Francisco also voted to support the ILWU stoppage with a two minute period of silence. The San Francisco Labor Council issued a resolution of support for the ILWU action and stated that it "encourages other unions to follow ILWU's call for a 'No Peace-No Work Holiday' or other labor actions on May Day, to express their opposition to the US wars and occupations in the Middle East”.

It is incumbent to concretize political opposition to US foreign policy through the election of candidates that have demonstrated support for the immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and Afghanistan. A political party that does not attempt to re-define the debate is simply continuing to base the nation’s priorities on a never-ending warfare state. The actions of the ILWU and the NY Metro Area Postal Workers represent direct action that can be taken in opposing the war. Voting for candidates like Cynthia McKinney represents political action that can be taken. Other policies at the state level should be sought to set up civilian conservation corps that responds to fires, natural disasters and emergencies. Without real change the “Hope” that is so bandied about by the Democrats and Republicans will be an illusion that disappears after election day.

Vermont AFL-CIO Resolution

In Solidarity With Longshoremens

West Coast Strike Against War

April, 2008

Whereas the war in Iraq is immoral, unwanted, and unnecessary,

Whereas this unjust war is opposed by the great majority of Americans
& Vermonters, the bulk of organized labor, and by thousands of
enlisted military personal,

Whereas this unjust war has already resulted in over 4000 American
dead (including a disproportionate number of brave Vermonters), and
tens of thousands of service men & woman being wounded,

Whereas this unjust war has further resulted in untold number of Iraqi
deaths,

Whereas the Federal Government has not made any constructive moves
towards the ending of this war and the full removal of US troops, and
instead has taken the course of escalation and indefinite occupation,

Whereas the government of Vermont, and especially Governor Jim
Douglas, have failed to find ways to bring Vermont National Guard
troops home from Iraq,

Whereas this war will only be brought to an end by the direct actions
of working people,

Therefore, Let It Be Resolved that the Vermont AFL-CIO continues to
stand in firm opposition to this war, and unequivocally supports the
decision of the Longshore Caucus of the International Longshore &
Warehouse Union (ILWU) to shutdown the west coast ports for a period
of 8 hours on May 1st, 2008, as a means of resistance.

Let It Be Resolved that the Vermont AFL-CIO stands in full solidarity
with the New York Metro National Association of Letter Carriers who
have resolved to conduct two minute periods of silence on May 1st,
2008, at 1PM, 5PM & 9PM in protest of the war and in support of the
Longshoremen.

Let It Be Resolved that the Vermont AFL-CIO encourages all Vermont
workers to stand in solidarity with the historic actions being taken
by the Longshoremen & other labor unions to end this war.

Let It Be Further Resolved that the Vermont AFL-CIO calls for all
Vermont workers to discuss the actions of the Longshoremen, to wear
anti-war buttons, and to take various actions of their own design and
choosing in their workplace on May 1st, 2008 as a means of resistance
against this unjust war.

San Francisco, California
May Day, 2008

It's a beautiful San Francisco day for a peace and dignity strike!

One day off to put peace and justice on the table! Today's action is as historically significant as the decision of four young university students who sat in for justice.

The strong, proud men and women of the ILWU have drawn a line in the sand. And I am proud of you!

By your actions here today, you too have declared your independence: from the policy makers now responsible for every bomb dropped, every child killed, every veteran maimed, every dream deferred.

Your line in the sand is a demand for public policy that reflects your values.

Your line in the sand:

A livable wage,

Repeal of the Bush tax cuts,

Repeal of the Patriot Acts, the Secret Evidence Act, the Military Commissions Act.

The right to unionize,

Single-payer health care,

Repeal of NAFTA,

An end to the Bush-Pelosi war.

Military Recruiters out and more teachers in our classrooms!

Nancy Pelosi wants to sneak another war-funding bill to the President. She thinks we don't know. She thinks we won't care. She thinks she can bushwhack and bamboozle us from the Speaker's Chair.

But Nancy, we're watching you! In fact, the whole world is watching. We see you when you choose to spend $720 million a day for war and yet teachers are being laid off in your district!

Speaker Pelosi, we see you when you remain silent on torture that violates the law; irreparably harms and sometimes even kills the innocent; and robs us all of our dignity as Americans.

Speaker Pelosi, and my former colleagues, how can you continue to give a half-trillion dollars annually to the Pentagon—an institution that's "lost" $2.3 trillion, and that didn't even protect itself on September 11th?

Republican President Dwight Eisenhower told us that every dime spent on war was in a very real sense a theft from those who are in need of food, shelter, and clothing.

Senator Feinstein was forced to leave the Military Construction subcommittee because she was voting on public policy that directly benefited her husband. And hence, her own bottom line.

The ILWU and all of us gathered here today want our young men and women to come home now—alive.

All of us gathered here today understand what George Washington warned of over 200 years ago: He warned us to beware the false patriots who, by cunning and ambition subvert the power of the people and usurp for themselves the very reins of government.

Snipers' bullets and assassins stole my generation of true patriots. One of them said, "A man can't ride your back unless it's bent." Our representatives can betray our values only so long as we continue to give them our vote, because it is our votes that give them their position of power over us.

Another of my generation's true patriots said, "Some see things as they are and say why; I dream of things that never were and say 'Why not?'" With our vision, values, and our votes, we can make real our dreams that never were. Why not?

Thank you!
