This is a summery of a Washington Post article . It gives us all a lot to think about the direction the US is headed. Why do you ask am I posting this? Well after being told for 17 years that this is the greatest country in the world I think it is time we citizens take a look at reality!

5 Myths about sick old Europe

1. The sclerotic European economy is incapable of leading the world.

the EU15 has become the largest economic force in the world constituting a third of the total world economy

2. Nobody wants to invest in European

companies and economies because lack of competitiveness makes them a poor bet.

foreign direct investment in the E.U. 15 was almost half the global total, and investment returns in Europe outperformed those in the United States

3. Europe is the land of double-digit unemployment

actually it's been a while since that was true, almost half have experience full employment and the other half is in the one digits and on top of that the jobs created in Europe come with benefits and afford a high standard of living unlike the majority of jobs created in the US.

4. The European "welfare state" hamstrings businesses and hurts the economy.

As Europe's economy has surged, it has maintained fairness and equality. Unlike in the United States, with its rampant inequality and lack of universal access to affordable health care and higher education, Europeans have harnessed their economic engine to create wealth that is broadly distributed.

5. Europe is likely to be held hostage to its dependence on Russia and the Middle East for most of its energy needs.

Europe may rely on energy from Russia and the Middle East for some time, but it is also leading the world in reducing its energy dependence and in taking action to counteract global climate change.

I understand that the EU is doing well but the question to me is not what group of countries can challange the US but what country can challange?
The latest elections in some of the countries of the EU have elected people who are further right than what has been true for many years. There are many efforts by corperations to curb the benefits given to workers in these countrys. The immagration of people to these countris and the lack of involvement by them into the culture and the economy has hurt these countries developement as economic super powers. Few countries in the world have been able to incorperate immigrants into the fabric of the country as the US has been able to do. Large segments of the populations of the countries of the EU are not included in the data for unemployment or under-employment. Because of the EU's dependance on Russian and Iranian energy,it is difficult to get co-operation on any policy toward Russia or Iran. I am not against the countries of Europe, just against comparing 15 countries to one. Bob, Citizen
