Free public transport for all - an idea whose time has come!

Considering the cost of fuel and environmental impact of personalized transportation I believe we need to examen our way of travel.

The Scottish Socialist Party ’s campaign for free public transport is an ``audacious, eye-catching idea'' according to Douglas Fraser, political editor of The Herald newspaper.

Watch the campaign video

In the Belgian city of Hasselt, which covers an area double the size of Dundee, congestion was eliminated in the late 1980s after the introduction of a totally free public transport system.

Green is the Conservatives' new favorite color in Germany

The Conservatives’ New Favorite Color; An alliance of Germany’s Christian Democrats and the Greens
suggests a potentially radical political realignment

Stefan Theil | Newsweek International | 05.26.2008

While the future effects of global warming are still hotly debated, the one very real thaw it has already produced is between the world’s environmentalists and their foes on the political right. Think John McCain’s embrace of the climate-change issue, or the greening of Britain’s Tories under their leader, David Cameron. The latest ice to break is between Germany’s once radical, antiestablishment Green Party and their erstwhile archenemy, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU). In a formerly unthinkable and possibly far-reaching realignment of German politics, conservatives and the Green Party have been entering alliances in local and regional parliaments, creating new power options for both parties—and a laboratory for breaking the logjam that has paralyzed German politics.

Will the Democrats ever cut our bloated military budget?

An expanding military budget taxpayers can't afford by Bernie Sanders

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

America's most colorful third party could use some attention — and some cash.

You might not know it from watching TV or listening to the radio, but a local landowner recently bulldozed a community garden, a power plant is set to be constructed between two wildlife refuges in the Everglades, and there are still four candidates from the Green Party running for president of the United States of America. Frustrated by the lack of media attention toward issues it feels are important, the Palm Beach County chapter of the Green Party in March hatched the idea of launching an internet radio station. On April 25, a Friday just weeks after the idea had been pitched, about 30 people gathered at the Little Owl Bar in Lake Worth. Their goal: to raise $1,000 to buy a mixer — a piece of broadcasting equipment for the station. In sustainable style, the fundraiser was a vegetarian potluck.

David Doonan was considering a run for public office last year, but not necessarily for Mayor. But when then Mayor Chris McCormick, was quoted in the local paper as saying "things are easier to get done when the public doesn't show up"

Doonan knew he had to run. "That was really the turning point for me". Doonan said, "People felt like they were shut out of the process, that decisions were being made without public input".

M ay 1st International Workers' Day will see significant actions by union workers against the war in Iraq. The most significant action will be taken by the dockworkers in San Francisco. Their decision to stop work on May 1st to express their opposition to the war in Iraq is a profound action. In a year in which Republicans and Democrats continue to promote policies that will prolong the war, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) is representing the opposition of a majority of people in the United States to the war.

The ILWU’s resolution calls for support from other segments of labor. "That it is time to take labor’s protest to a more powerful level of struggle by calling on unions and working people in the U. S. and internationally to mobilize for a 'No Peace No Work Holiday' May 1, 2008 for 8 hours to demand an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan and the withdrawal of U. S. troops from the Middle East and that a clarion call from the ILWU be sent with an urgent appeal for unity of action to the AFL-CIO, the Change to Win Coalition and all of the international labor organizations to which we are affiliated to bring an end to this bloody war once and for all."

North Carolina Ballot Access History

North Carolina ranks as the 3rd worst state in the nation for open ballot access.

This means third parties and candidates are essentially kept out of elections. A simple solution is to reduce the number of signatures required to gain ballot access – a step many other states have already taken.

Germany's Green Party Opens Chapter in Washington

Germany's Green Party is setting up a branch in the United States. The bottom-up initiative aims to bring a more international perspective to the party's work and combat anti-Americanism among some members back home.

The chapter is due to be officially founded next weekend in Washington DC. It hopes to tap into the experiences of the growing number of Germans working in the US capital in international organizations, foundations and think tanks, as well as in the media, the culture industry and higher education.
