Baghdad, Jun 17, (VOI) - A report of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that the number of displaced Iraqis in Iraq rose to 800,000 compared to 400,000 in 2007.
"The number of Iraqi refugees outside Iraq reached 2 million, most of them residing in Syria and Jordan," said the report distributed on Monday and received by Aswat al-Iraq - Voices of Iraq - (VOI).
"The number of Iraqis who presented applications to refuge to European countries from 2007 to 2008 rose to 52,000," the report said.
"A total of 45,000 refugees returned to Iraq, while others preferred to refuge to other countries like Sweden, U.S., Canada and Norway," the report highlighted.
Last year, the U.N. urged the international community to donate $60 million as an emergency aid to deal with the refugees cause.
