AZGP Presidential Primary Election 6 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 2

Introduction
The AZGP passed its presidential primary process at the January 12th meeting in Phoenix. Due to delays in receiving accurate mailing information on registered Greens in certain counties, the mailing and deadline for receiving the mailing was pushed back several times. The final results are now in, and they shall be detailed in the report below.

Vote Counting
As per the proposal passed at the January 12th meeting of the AZGP, the totals of first choice and second choice votes were tallied for each candidate including “None of the Above” and all write-ins. The calculations themselves use only first choice, and other rankings are to be used by the delegates to best ascertain the will of Arizona Greens in the event that multiple rounds of voting occur.

First Choice

SWIFT, KAT - 14 = 8.2%
MESPLAY, KENT - 16 = 9.4%
MCKINNEY, CYNTHIA - 118 = 69.4%
JOHNSON, JESSE - 19 = 11.2%
NOTA - 1 = 0.6%
OBAMA, BARACK* - 1 = 0.6%
NADER, RALPH* - 1 =0.6%

Second Choice

SWIFT, KAT - 34 = 22.5%
MESPLAY, KENT - 39 = 25.8%
MCKINNEY, CYNTHIA - 23 = 15.2%
JOHNSON, JESSE - 54 = 35.8%
GONZALEZ, MATT* - 1 = 0.7%

Delegate Allocation
The first step in determining the number of delegates bound to each candidate is to determine the number of first choice votes a candidate needs to earn one delegate. This number is calculated by dividing the total number of first choice votes cast by the number of delegates the AZGP will have total. There were 170 first choice votes cast and Arizona was given 8 delegates, so this number is 21.25. By this method alone, Cynthia McKinney is awarded 5 delegates while no other candidate meets the threshold.

Binding the remaining delegates is done by the method of least proportions, a mathematical formula which calculates which candidate most “deserves” another delegate _base_d on how many votes they received and how many delegates they have already. By this method, Jesse Johnson is first awarded a delegate, then Cynthia McKinney is awarded a sixth delegate, and finally Kent Mesplay is awarded the 8th and final delegate. In total, by these numbers, Cynthia McKinney is awarded 6 delegates, Jesse Johnson is awarded 1 delegate, and Kent Mesplay is awarded 1 delegate.
